The small amounts of processed foods popular in the late 1800s skyrocketed in the 20th century. Foods were heavily salted, heavily sugared, and ready to go. There was less home made food, partially due to women joining the work force and no longer staying home to cook all day. Leading into more modern day, America has tried to take a turn for health, but still the most popular foods are the ones that are very sweet and very salty. Especially due to sugared beverages our palets have been changed drastically from the early days of ancient greece, however as a society we still seek sweet and salty as our primary flavors.
